3. History 3

Renowned for producing most of our own players through an active youth section we enjoyed a notable period of success and growth in the 1980's and early 1990's.

Since then the club has experienced ups and downs. We won promotion to Durham and Northumberland League 2 as champions at the end of 2005-6 season (The photo on the right shows captain, Tim Beech. receiving the D&N League 3 trophy from Yorkshire President Ralph Kester at the League Awards evening in June 2006).

Unfortunately, promotion turned into a major problem as the club was hit by injuries and the departure of several players. Whilst not playing badly the team lost key matches, several by less than 5 points with the result that the 2006-7 season ended in relegation. In the 2008-09 season many older players disappeared from the 1st.XV line-up and youth was given its head under the enthusiastic and committed leadership of captain Tony Smithson. The result was a highly successful season which culminated in promotion to Durham/Northumberland 2. We were helped in this success by coaching input from two of Newcastle Falcons front row, the outstanding New Zealand All Blacks Joe McDonnell and Carl Heyman.

Despite challenge from soccer locally we feel much better placed for survival and development than some Northumberland clubs. In October 2009 a new £375,000 block was opened. This project includes 4 magnificent changing rooms, referee changing/shower accommodation, Physio room and a brand new club entrance lobby. Fittingly, Carl Heyman was asked to do the honours at the opening by unvieling the commemorative plaque.
The club made further progress by achieving promotion to league Durham/Northumberland 1 at the end of the 2011/12 season; a great way to celebrate the club's 50th. Anniversary since refounding.

After a shaky first season at this higher level in which safety from relegation was not achieved until the final match of the season the club has progressed further. During season 2013/14 we were in the top two places for the first 5 months until the side was crippled with a spate of injuries. Nevertheless the 1st.XV finished the season on a high by winning their first cup competition for nearly 40 years when beating Berwick 37-31 in the final of the Northumberland Senior Plate. This was a fitting conclusion to the captaincy of Tony Smithson after a record breaking 6 years in the job.
