Blyth Under 10's travelled to Haydon Bridge to take on West Tyne at the weekend and under some very blustery conditions, but performed brilliantly and played some exceptional rugby.
Following some mixed training drills prior to the match, Blyth started well and took advantage of the space afforded to them on a larger than normal pitch - a pitch so large, that every run became a lung-buster! The relative size of the pitch was a discussion point throughout and with West Tyne short of players, the match was a 7 a-side game, meaning even more pitch to cover for all of the players involved.
Some typically pacy and jinking runs from Ethan Cook and Taylor Ogle were brilliantly supported by Owen Hardwick, who was everywhere on the field, assisting at the breakdown. Lewis Conroy also providing great support. Jake Bolton and Jack Marshall put in a couple of great shifts, Jake touching down for a try and Jack putting in some big hits and both using their size to help drive the team forward.
As ever, Oliver Matthews was putting his head in where it hurts with some ferocious tackling, at one point taking a spin as he refused to let a West Tyne player escape - getting a wobbly tooth for his troubles!
A special thanks to Frank Klodnar who offered to help the home side and play for them, making some really good breaks through the Blyth defensive line.
A referee keen to speed up the restart following any tries, meant all players tired towards the end of the game, but as always, no complaints were made by the Under 10's and they stuck to the task in hand, despite the obvious heavy legs.
The first game was followed up by a second, shorter game, where thanks should be paid to Ethan Cook who volunteered to turn out for West Tyne.
Following the Percy Park festival and now after this weekend's games, Blyth are starting to look like a very effective team, with each member stepping up in the last two weeks and really coming to terms with the new aspects of the game.
Next weekend (22nd October) is training, at the Club, followed by the Falcons Festival at Kingston Park on the 29th.
